Football has it's share of unpopular and controversial rules. There still is confusion over a reception when the ball partially hits the ground, whether a coach and the referee should be able to plan in advance a timeout before a field goal attempt and can you have pass interference if the pass is uncatchable.
Some routes are poorly named and plays are poorly designed and overused in many play books. These are a few of the issues that get attention from time to time, but one thing that has withstood change for a long time is the naming of the offensive tackle position.
Somewhere along the line offensive tackles were misnamed. The offensive tackle guards the quarterback and blocks. He rarely if ever tackles anybody.
Better names for offensive tackles are outside guards or out-guards, offensive ends or blockers.
No wonder he gets called for so many penalties.
